BEYOND SUNSET TERRACE

Design Challenge: The large front entry garden and wide cut stone pathway receives hot afternoon sunlight, had huge mature grasses and deciduous shrubs, some lovely trees. It had many barren spots and was especially bleak in the winter. No focal points existed and no address was posted.

Now:
The beds were amended and bermed gracefully to soften the expansive gardens. There are swathes of beautiful and hardy new conifers, evergreen shrubs, smaller grasses, and colorful perennials and groundcovers. Something interesting is always happening in this 4-season landscape. An etched address stone was chosen and placed. The path has been softened with sedums replacing some of the stonework. A large container tucked beside the sidewalk adds height and interest on the way to the front door. Most of the original plants were reused by dividing them up and repositioning them. Ornamental pruning of the existing trees and shrubs brought them grace again. As the landscape matures the layers will fill in and be thankfully easy-care for the owners of this large property.
