Challenge:
The wonderfully wide new stairs from the newly expanded deck ended in slopping grass. Lots of grass! The mature shrubs in the current beds were in need of pruning and many bare spots needed filling in. More visual privacy was needed from a nearby home. The lovely territorial and mountain views to the east needed protecting. Would a new lower terrace be a good addition for this family who entertains?
Now:
We began by concentrating on the landscaping closest to the house. The slopping land had elevation challenges. Several small rock walls and stairs solved the grade changes and they blend beautifully with the home's colors. The owner spent countless hours laying the extensive stone work. The paths now connect the areas around the home for convenience and unity. Beds were reshaped and added. A custom two-tiered fountain is a focal point with a lovely calm sound. Surrounded with flowering plants a bird bath rock has a lovely perch while the birds enjoy the bath water.
Fragrant roses are climbing a trellis at the edge of the stone terrace. The hardy plants hint at the Mediterranean themed garden, move in the wind, and most of the plants from the front garden are found here as well. As many original plants as possible from the site have been reused in swathes of texture and color. Cutting flowers are establishing themselves and provide plentiful bouquets all summer and fall long. The seasonal views of this garden are ever-changing.
The new furniture with its lovely outdoor fabric is comfortably arranged around the firetable--a welcoming place for friends and family.
